me looked on byall who frequented it as an ideal of comfort and harmony.There was a sweet old-world atmosphere in the house, anodour of fresh flowers and old books. The walls were linedwith rare engravings, chiefly portraits of men and womenmore or less connected with Ireland in the past; much ofthe furniture was a couple of hundred years old, cherishedremnants from a great-grandfathers home in Devonshire, orfrom Jervis Street, Dublin, or rescued from the burning ofthe old house at Brannickstown. On some of the old silverand glass on the table appeared mysterious masonic emblems,reminding the Irish Catholic Gilberts of their English Pro-testant forefathers. As for books, they were everywhere. Alarge library was lined with them from ceiling to floor; thedining-room had admitted two noble bookcases where someprecious tomes in rare ancient bindings of great beauty werepreserved under glass ; even the drawing-room had contrivedto work in several well-filled bookstands among its ornaments,

In the late sixties the strong, meek mother was living thelast years of her life. Her portrait shows a broad, calm brow,mouth with sweet and pathetic lines, serious and sympatheticeyes, white hair, still flecked with the gold of the past, partedin smooth bands under the widows cap which she wore forthirty-seven years. Gilberts devotion to his mother, onwhose personal traits and many of whose mental character-istics his own were modelled, was noted by his friends, who tellhow he would sit by her side in the evenings, and lead her tothe piano on his arm with an air of tender courtliness that waspleasant to see.
