General Cass was the Democraticcandidate. General Taylor had said, in accept-ing the nomination,— Upon the subject of the tariff, the currency,the improvement of our great highways, rivers,lakes, and harbors, the will of the people, as ex-pressed through their representatives in Congress,ought to be respected and carried out by the ex-ecutive. Mr. Lincoln, pithily and approvingly comment-ing upon this, said, The people say to GeneralTaylor, If you are elected, shall we have a na-tional bank? He answers, Your will, gentle-men, not mine. What about the tariff? Sayyourselves. Shall our rivers and harbors be im-proved? Just as you please. H you desire abank, and alteration in the tariff, internal im-provements, any or all, I will not hinder you;if you do not desire them, I will not attemptto force them on you. Send up your members
