SARAH BUSH LINCOLN ABRAHAM LINCOLN. 11 funeral sermon; and the neighbors, to thenumber of two hundred, who were scatteredin that sparsely settled region over a distanceof twenty miles, assembled to attend the ser-vice. It was a scene for a painter,—the log-cabin,alone in its solitude; the widespread prairie,beautiful in the light of the Sabbath morningsun; the grove; the grave; the group seatedaround upon logs and stumps; the venerablepreacher; the mourning family; and Abraham,with his marked figure and countenance, hiseyes swimming with tears, gazing upon thescene which was thus honoring the memoryof his revered mother. Abraham had written the letter inviting thepastor to preach the funeral sermon. He soonbecame the scribe of the uneducated com-munity around him. He could not have had abetter school than this to teach him to putthoughts into words. He also became an eagerreader. The books he could obtain were few;but these he read and re-read until they werealmost committed to memo
