ct. The campaign was now fairly opened. Afterone or two speeches, in which ^Ir. Douglas andMr. Lincoln addressed the same audiences, but atdiflferent meetings. Air. Lincoln, on the 24th ofJuly, 185S, sent a proposition to Sir. Douglas thatthey should make arrangements to speak at thesame meetings, dividing the time between them.The proposition was agreed to for seven towns.At the iirst. Air. Douglas was to speak for anhour, and Air. Lincoln for an hour and a half.then Air. Douglas was to have the closing speechof half an hour. At the next the time occupiedwas to be reversed. Thus they were to alternateuntil the close. The first meeting was at Ottawa. Twelve thou-sand citizens had assembled. Air. Douglas had theopening speech. The friends of Air. Lincoln wereroused to the greatest enthusiasm by his trium-phant reply upon this occasion, and they almostliterally bore him from the stage upon their shoul-ders. Immense crowds attended every meeting.Both speeches were carefully reported. The

Lin-colns success, that they published in one pamphletthe speeches on both sides, and circulated themwidely as a campaign document. The verdict ofthe nation has been that Air. Lincoln was morallyand intellectually the victor. By an unfair apportionment of the legislativedistricts )\Ir. Lincoln was beaten in his contestfor a seat in the Senate, but, very unexpectedly tohimself, he won a far higher prize. Air. Lincolnmade about sixty speeches during the canvass.When asked how he felt after his defeat, he re-plied characteristically, I felt like the boy whohad stubbed his toe,—too badly to laugh, and toobig to cry.
