His home was a wretched log-cabin; his food, the coarsest and the meanest.Education he had none: he could never eitherread or write. As soon as he was able to doanything for himself, he was compelled toleave the cabin of his starving mother, andpush out into the world, a friendless, wander-ing boy, seeking work.
