The Presi-dent subsequently related the following singularincident as having taken place at that time:— A very singular occurrence took place theday I was nominated at Chicago, of which I amreminded tonight. In the afternoon of the day,returning home from down town, I went upstairsto Mrs. Lincolns sitting-room. FeeHng some-what tired, I lay down upon a couch in the room,directly opposite a bureau, upon which was alooking-glass. As I reclined, my eyes fell uponthe glass, and I saw distinctly fiKo images ofmyself, exactly alike, except that one was a lit-tle paler than the other. I arose, and lay downagain with the same result. It made me quiteuncomfortable for a few moments; but. somefriends coming in, the matter passed out of mymind. The next day, while walking in the street, Iwas suddenly reminded of the circumstance; and

I determined to go home, and place my-self in the same position; and, if the same effectwas produced, I would make up my mind that itwas the natural result of some principle of re-fraction or optics which I did not understand,and dismiss it. I tried the experiment with alike result; and, as I said to myself, accountingfor it on some principle unknown to me, it ceasedto trouble me. But, some time ago, I tried to produce thesame effect Jicrc by arranging a glass and couchin the same position, without effect. jNIy wifewas somewhat worried about it. She thought itwas a sign that I was to be elected to a secondterm of offtce, and that the paleness of one ofthe faces was an omen that I should not see lifethrough the second term.
