ops from his face ; down hills, acrossstreams, over logs he ran ; darkness began to gather;the trail could hardly be discerned. On, on, on, faint-ing, hungry, exhausted, but he dared not stop to rest.At nine oclock, on a little hill covered with a dense growthof pine-trees, the trail was hopelessly lost. There was awild, bitter search for a moment, a feeling of despair, when Hurrah ! Through the woods there gleamed alight; it was a camp-fire on a hill only half a milebeyond. That distance was soon made. Maine fellexhausted on the ground. The story was soon told. The guide hastened out in search of Michigan, and attwelve oclock he returned safely with him. During thjafternoon, while the dudes were fishing, some villains hadstolen all our food, so we had no supper or breakfast, but the dudes kindly rolled the rustlers up in theblankets, built a big fire at their feet, and told us to restand sleep while they sat or laid upon the ground andkept a faithful watch over us. Text Appearing After Image:
292 LIFE IN THE WORLDS WONDERLAND. The next morning a thousand questions were askedabout the bear. What made you fall backward downthe mountain ? asked one. Why, the rifle kicked, Ireplied. Nonsense ! chimed in all the dudes. Iwill leave it for Michigan to decide whether it did ornot, I urged. To this they all agreed and to Michiganwe turned for a verdict. A fact, gravely exclaimedthat worthy ; the rifle kicked him down and then kickedhim two or three times after he was down. Such testi-mony was a clincher. The dudes wisely resolved that itwould not be well for them to undertake to follow theroute which Michigan and Maine had passed over, andwe began our march towards civilization, and very thank-ful we were when we reached the old Germans wherewe had left the horses, and right royally did that gentle-man entertain us with hot coffee and bread, which afast of nearly twenty-four hours rendered the mostdelicious that I ever enjoyed. The horses were har-nessed and we were soon on our way
