It may not be superfluous to remind the reader that after Savonarolasdeath one of the numerous acts of persecution directed against the con-vent consisted in depriving it under false pretences of all the booksbelonging to the Medici collection. In October, 1500, they were restoredunderWsh conditions, and at last, in 1508, the community being burdenedwith debts, and Savonarola, the careful preserver of the books, being nolonger alive, the collection was sold to Galeotto Franciosi, the agent ofCardinal Giovanni de Medici, afterwards Leo X.
