The Con-federates, most of whom were Texan volunteers, madea gallant resistance. A regiment of cavalry, aban-doning their horses, fought on foot, and rendered fora time effective service in resisting the advance of theNationals. It was impossible for them to resist thefierce onset made by overwhelming numbers resolvedto win or die. A Storm of Bullets. Sherman pressed forward on the right, Morgan onthe left, each driving the Confederates back and grad-aally obtaining possession of the wooded ground infront of the newly-erected parapet, but not withoutconsiderable loss. The Confederate firing was heavy,but the National soldiers took advantage of the clumpsof trees and felled logs to shield themselves from thestorm of bullets.
