The Art Institute reflected a differenttemperament, of gentler and loftier attributes withwhich he was endowed. This Art Institute stands today among the threeor four great museums of the country. It is remark-able that it had its first beginning as early as 1866 andearlier than any other similar institution anywhereelse in the country except New York and Philadelphia.The nucleus of the present organization was knownas the Chicago Academy of Design, which was merelyan association of artists which continued in more orless active form until 1882.
