Chapter I BOYHOOD LIFE IN WEST WINFIELD 1841-1855 NOTHING appears to be known of this par-ticular Baker family prior to my grandfather,who was William Baker, born in Bradford,England, about 1799. In that country, he was a bakerby trade as well as by name, and he had been a butchertoo. He came to this country in 1838 and drifted toWest Winfield, a small village of about one hundredand fifty people, in Herkimer County, New York.Here he made a pretence of earning a livelihood, bydoing chores about the village, acting as porter andhostler to the village inn, and working upon the neigh-borhood farms. He is remembered as a man who wasnot always sober, which fact to some extent at leastundermined his usefulness. Yet notwithstanding hisshortcomings, he was in some respects, a remarkablecharacter. He was a man of good address, and wellgroomed considering his circumstances.
