Life Ring, VP-43 1940 - 1942 NHHC 2002-18-1 Naval History and Heritage Command: Headquarter Artifact Collection This battered life ring was recovered from the remains of a US Navy PBY-5 Catalina on Kiska Island. Patrol Squadron VP-43 was part of the Aleutian Campaign to end Japanese occupation of several of the Aleutian Islands during World War II. After encountering poor weather conditions and heavy enemy fire, the aircraft crashed into the slopes of Kiska volcano.
