Kit Carson KIT CARSON. 185 Louis, as Fremont was starting on his first ex-pedition—neither had ever heard of the other.But Carsons character, although then unknownin the settlements, had long before become anobject of pride and admiration to every braveheart among the trappers and hunters ofAmerica. Christopher Carson was born in Kentuckyabout the year 1811, his father having been oneof the early settlers of that State, and noted inhis day as a hunter and Indian fighter. Withina year or two after the birth of Kit, the familymoved to the then frontiers of Missouri. At theage of fifteen Kit joined a trading party to SanteFe. From that point he went into the lowerMexican provinces, following various adven-tures ; among others he was employed for sometime as a teamster, in connection with the cop-per mines of Chihuahua.
