Das 51,9 m. hohe, 18-geschossige^[1] Hochhaus steht an einer zwischen 1961 und 1963 neu geschaffenen Kreuzung. Diese Kreuzung ist Teile einer sogenannten "Südtangente"^[2] (der Name hat sich nicht durchgesetzt), die den Kurfürstendamm, und die Tauentzienstraße verkehrstechnisch entlasten sollte. In den Jahrzehnten nach dem 2. Weltkrieg war international das "autogerechte" Bauen und Umgestalten von Architektur und Infrastruktur das Gebot der Stunde. Zwar wurde die Realisierung einer "autogerechten" Zukunft von der Wirklichkeit und von großen Teilen der öffentlichen Meinung überholt, doch die Ecke Lietzenburger Straße, Martin-Luther-Straße, an der das 18-geschossige, 51,9 m. hohe GEWOBAG-Wohnhochhaus "Lietzenburger Eck" nicht übergroß wirkt, bleibt, und erinnert an eine Zeit, zu der Träume von einer automotiven Individualverkehrsutopie noch keine Grenzen kannten.

GEWOBAG high-rise apartment building "Lietzenburger Eck", Lietzenburger Strasse 1 seen from across Martin-Luther-Strasse, Berlin-Schöneberg. The 51.9 m. high, 18-storey tower^[3] stands at an intersection that was created between 1961 and 1963. This intersection is part of a so-called "Südtangente"^[4] (the name never caught on), which planners hoped would relieve traffic on Kurfürstendamm and Tauentzienstraße. In the decades following World War II, building and redesigning architecture and infrastructure to be "car-friendly" was the world-wide order of the day. Though the realization of a "car-friendly" future was eventually overtaken by reality and by large portions of public opinion, the corner of Lietzenburger Straße and Martin-Luther-Straße, on which the 18-storey, 51.9 m. high GEWOBAG residential tower "Lietzenburger Eck" doesn't feel disproportionately large, remains to remind us of a time when we were all destined to become "The Jetsons".
