Das Schicksal des Liebespaares Tristrant und Isalde wird durch einen Liebestrank bestimmt, den sie nur aus Versehen genossen haben. Damit entschuldigt der Autor zwar den darauf folgenden wiederholten Ehebruch, gesellschaftliche Anerkennung erhält das Paar aber nicht. Am Hof König Markes, dem Ehemann Isaldes, will ein Zwerg den Ehebruch aufdecken. Er streut zwischen den Betten des Paares Mehl, um in darin hinterlassenen Fußspuren einen Beweis für den Ehebruch zu erhalten. Doch Tristrant erkennt die Falle und springt von seinem in Isaldes Bett. Neben Erzählmotiven zu Ritter- und Heldentum geht es dem Versroman vor allem um den Konflikt zwischen der gesellschaftlich legitimierten Ehe und dem Ideal der höfischen Liebe. Die Erzählung gründet auf einem mündlich tradierten keltisch-französischen Sagenstoff, der im 12. Jahrhundert vermutlich am Hofe Eleonores von Aquitanien und Heinrichs II. von England schriftlich fixiert wurde. Auf diesen Ur-Tristan geht die Fassung des Eilhart von Oberg zurück. Sie ist wohl um 1170 entstanden und die einzige vollständige Versfassung des Mittelalters überhaupt. |
