English: Lichen-covered tree trunk Some of the tree trunks stand out because of their rusty-orange colouration, caused by lichens that are growing on them. Lichens are often the first to settle in places that lack soil and they can be found in extreme environments such as at high latitudes, in deserts or in the arctic; some lichens can even survive in space. Many lichens grow on the trunks and branches of trees. Because of their sensitivity to pollutants they have been widely used as pollution indicator organisms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lichen |
