In the churches are suspended, not coroim,but wheels studded with gems and surrounded by lights, whichare scarcely brighter than the precious stones which are nearthem. Instead of candlesticks, we behold great trees of brassfashioned with wonderful skill, and glittering as much throughtheir jewels as their lights. What do you suppose is the objectof all this? The repentance of the contrite, or the admirationof the gazers? O vanity of vanities! but not more vain thanfoolish. The churchs walls are resplendent, but the poor arenot there. . . .
