Summary
[edit]DescriptionLibrary of Celsus, Ephesus Archaeological Site, Selcuk, Turkiye (53527774681).jpg | Built circa 110-117 AD, this Classical Roman library was constructed by local Roman Consul Tiberius Julius Aquila Polemaeanus as a memorial to his father, former Consul Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus. The library was the third-largest in the Roman empire at the time of its completion, only exceeded in size by the libraries at Alexandria and Pergamum, and had a capacity of 12,000 scrolls. The library stood until 262 AD, when the interior was destroyed by fire, and the facade stood until an earthquake around the year 1000 AD. The library’s facade was a pile of rubble until the 1978, when reconstruction by German archaeologists was completed, with new pieces being carved to replace those that were missing, including several that were taken by European archaeologists in the early 20th Century, which are today held in collections by several European museums. Today, it is one of the most famous monuments in the ancient city of Ephesus. The ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. |
