Description

The Liberty Cap, a 37-foot tower of created by hot spring activity in one location over hundreds of years, is one of Mammoth's signature attractions. Ferdinand V. Hayden named the feature during his 1871 survey, believing it resembled the peaked hats worn during the French Revolution representing freedom and liberty. The travertine cone remains relatively intact, with only a few pieces falling off the formation over the last century and a half.
