Libby Prison (CP 3410), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: “Libby Prison.” The Only Picture in Existence. As it Appeared August 23, 1863. Copyright, 1882, by J.L. Barlow, Richmond, Va. Published by Allen and Wm. A. Mountcastle, Richmond, Va. Libby Prison was a Confederate prison at Richmond, Virginia during the American Civil War. It was notoriously overcrowded and unsanitary, with high malnutrition and mortality rates. It was used for other purposes after the war, and eventually dismantled in 1899. Inscription on reverse: “Old ‘Libby Prison’ Building, Richmond, Va. From the Original Photograph, taken August 23, 1863. Being perfectly familiar with the appearance of ‘Libby Prison’ and its surroundings at the date above mentioned, we hereby certify that this picture is what it purports to be. S.H. Hawes, Wood and Coal Dealer, 17th & Cary Sts.; W.H.P. Morris, Major C.S.A., 112 S. First St.; N.V. Randolph, Bookseller, 1302 Main St.; Jno. B. Purcell, Col. 1st Reg’t Va. Volunteers; C.R. Morton, Late Stuart’s Horse Artillery, C.S.A.; Capt. John S. Wise, U.S. District Attorney; Thos. J. Evans, Colonel 19th Va. Regiment. Prisoners: Geo. N.
