Summary

[edit]
Description
English: "This work is from an illustrated edition of a Qing dynasty version of the Chuci poetry anthology misleadingly entitled Illustrated Li Sao. Together with text from the poem "Lord of the East" from the "Nine Songs" {Jiu Ge) section, it shows a picture of Dong Jun, the Lord of the East, and attendants. The poetry anthology Chu Ci, was compiled during the Han dynasty from Han and pre-Han works. This, much later, version was illustrated by Xiao Yuncong (1596-1673), a famed early Qing painter, and was engraved by Tang Yongxian. According to Wang Zhongmin in A descriptive catalog of rare Chinese books in the Library of Congress (Washington, DC: Library of Congress, 1957) Pan Zuyin (1830-90), a late Qing man of letters and linguist and Qing official, reissued the work and rebound it in four volumes, but retained the original title [s.c. "authorial attribution"], which reads: "By Xiao Yuncong of Quhu." This rebound edition has two original prefaces, one by Li Kai (not dated) and the other by Xiao Yuncong, the painter (dated 1645)."
