Description
English: Two Sages. Jokhang Temple, Lhasa, Tibet

Arhats, or spiritually enlightened individuals, were portrayed in China as "foreigners" (Indians) of unconventional appearance and behavior. In Tibet, a related type was the mahasiddhas (great sages), who were represented both in conventional and in unconventional forms. Here we see two sages in conversation, one in foreign clothes and beard, and the other dressed as a monk. Rondels above their heads indicate their spiritual lineage.
