Text Appearing Before Image:
loor. One morning early I waswaked by the entrance into my room of two men inConfederate uniform and conspicuous revolvers.I sat up in some bewilderment and asked theirerrand. They were two of Shermans scouts whohad just got through to us and wished to delivertheir message. After that had been attended to,one of them said he would like to consult a doctoras he had a buckshot in his thigh. He said that aday or two before starting to come to us he andtwo companions were out looking about and cameupon a party of home guards. Jim took the leftflank, and Joe the center, and I the right flank andwe went at them with a yell. They ran like rab-bits, all but one old man near me. I called onhim to surrender and he lowered his gun. I lookedaround to see if there were any others and as Iturned back he was drawing on me. I threw my-self down on the horse and fired my revolver athim just as he fired, and one of his shot went rightthrough my leg. And, reproachfully, he was oldenough to be my father.

But he had nottime enough. Oh, he said, if our men hadonly been a little later Id have put up the prettiestlittle fight. The most impressive thing that happened duringour three weeks stay in Wilmington was the recep-tion of ten thousand of our prisoners turned overto us by General Hoke because he could no longercare for them. They had been gathered fromvarious Southern prisons that lay within the lineof Shermans marches and had been herded alongwith the troops that were more or less closelyopposing Sherman and us. They were broughtby rail to the opposite bank of the river upon whichwe had our outpost, ten miles out from Wilmington, and we laid there a pon
