Description

On February 26 1829 Levi Strauss was born, the founder of Levi Strauss & Co. the clothing company. He was born in Germany but moved to the USA at the age of 18. Strauss started his company in 1853 after becoming a US Citizen. The company initially imported fine dry goods—clothing, bedding, combs, purses, handkerchiefs—from his brothers in New York. Levi Strauss died on September 26, 1902 in San Francisco at the age of 73. He never married, so he left the business to his four nephews, Jacob, Sigmund, Louis, and Abraham Stern, the sons of his sister Fanny and her husband David Stern. He also left bequests to a number of charities such as the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum and the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum.

We are unsure as to when Levi's clothing was first exported to New Zealand, but customs files in our Auckland office indicate that products were being imported as early as 1896. The correspondence in the Customs files relates to invoices and import duties being paid in New Zealand. In 1899 Customs questioned the use of two invoices giving alternative values for imported denim clothing depending on discount levels. This resulted in less duty being paid. A lawyer representing the company complained about Customs adding value to the invoices and thus charging more duty. The dispute seems to have continued into 1901, when Customs officers were instructed not to add 5% to the value of items on the list given in this letter. The letter makes reference to correspondence Customs had with Strauss's nephew Jacob. Noteworthy items on the list of imported goods include Series 501 jumpers and Series 511 pants (jeans).

This item as well as other items of correspondence from the Auckland Customs office can be seen in our Auckland Regional Office. For further enquiries, please email Auckland.Archives@dia.govt.nz
