(the seat of DartmouthCollege), giving the young proprietor an inter-est in the business. He soon became a favor-ite with the students, and remained there sixyears, and then went to Boston, where, in of L. P. Morton & Co., one member of whichwas Charles \V. McCune, afterward of the Buf-falo Courier. In 18G3 Mr. McCune withdrew,while the remaining partners established thebanking-house of L. P. Morton & Co., at No. 35Wall Street. A London branch was soon estab-lished under the title, L. P. Morton, Burns &1849, he entered the house of James M. Beebe Co., but in 1869 that firm was dissolved, Sir

LEVI PARSONS MORTON. & Co. Two years later, the firm made him apartner, opened a branch in New York knownas J. M. Beebe, Morgan & Co., and placed himin it. In 1854 Mr. Morgan (father of PierpontMorgan, of Morgan, Drexel & Co.) went toLondon, and Mr. Morton soon afterward or-ganized the firm of Morton & Grinnell, whichcontinued in business until the beginning ofthe civil war. In 1856 Mr. Morton had mar-ried Miss Lucy Kimball, daughter of Elijah II.Kimball, of Flatlands, Long Island. Late in1861 Mr. Morton founded the mercantile firmvol. xxviii.—31 A John Eose, Finance Minister of Canada, be-coming Mr. Mortons partner in London, underder the firm-name of Morton, Rose & Co. Atthe same time George Bliss entered the NewYork firm. At home the house of Morton,Bliss & Co. rendered material aid to the Gov-ernment; and abroad, Morton, Rose & Co. be-came the fiscal agents of the United States,and were active in the negotiations that end-ed in the Geneva and Halifax
