English: Levant man-engine house These are the remains of the house built 1855-56 for the engine that drove the man-engine at Levant, an early means of lowering or lifting miners who otherwise faced more than 1200 feet of ladders before and after each shift. A disastrous accident in 1919 killed 31 men. |
