dear brother


after a long silence I lift my pen to write you a few lines to let you that I am well and hope these few lines may find you and yours enjoying the same state of health the 2ond Iowa cavalry landed here on the 10th I cannot tell you whether we will go any farther soon or not there was two Comp came in last night to sedalia this brought 150 prisonors with them There is about 18.000 men in benton barracks at this time it is a very boutifull place about three miles from the river and contains about 300 acres we have good grub and plenty of it I have not heard from you for a long time and I want you to write to me soon and let me know how you are getting a long

I left my family all well but little cally when I came away I have not heard from them yet but I think I will hear soon now

I have now got supper over over and resume my seat to write a few lines more on this sheet I have been cooking for the last week as head cook but dont like the biz and sent in my resignation this evening I prefer drilling to cooking it is a big job for 3 men to cook for 100 men we received part of our weapons on saturday evening we have the best field officers in this camp Col Ebot is a man hard to beat

But I must close with my love to you yours and all enquiring friends
