Point Pleasant Mo March

Friend Em

I received your letter of the 2nd some days ago and have no had time to answer it untill now we are well at present and hope these few lines will find you the same John has been rather unwell for a few days but is ready for duty since I wrote to you last we have had some pretty tough times such as laying out of doors when we left Commerce we went to New Madrid and staid thee a few days and then we came to this Point not withstanding the hardships I would not go home to stay if I had the chance and they would pay me $100 in gold I like this this is Soldiering after the old stile we are having very good times here the enemy is 7 miles below here it is only 5 miles from here to Island No 10 where they have been fighting for 2 weeks and are at it yet our forces have taken New Madrid with a loss of 8 men killed and 15 men wounded we are 8 miles below New Madrid the Rebel Gunboats have been running up and down the river till within a few days they have been stopped by our men planting 2 large guns 8 miles below here they tried to take our guns with their gunboats there was 7 boats against 2 of our guns and would have succeeded had it not been for our sharpshooters they laid in their pits till the boats got almost to the shore when our men sent a volley of musket balls at their boats which killed a great many of their gunners they thought it was getting rather hot and they left a few of their boats disabled and one sunk They thought they was a going to be attacted down below here 5 miles a Riddles Point and we went down there but no fight this time so it is all the time when we get there they are not to be found so we had to come back that was a wild goose chase Well Em I will have to close for this time as it is getting late and the bed is not made yet they boys are getting sleepy give my respects to all inquiring friends & receive a portion yourself write soon as you get this yours truly
