Summary
[edit]DescriptionLetter from Tikawenga to Māori chiefs of North Island (25 July 1870) (28161941420).jpg |
On July 25 1870 Wairarapa chief Tikawenga wrote a letter on behalf of the chiefs of the lower North Island to other North Island chiefs requesting that Māori not kill each other in wars which were to their detriment. He requested that Māori unite in order to derive some advantage from the struggle they faced in colonial wars. Tikawenga Te Tau was a leading chief of Ngai Tumapuhiarangi. In 1860 Tikawenga initiated a major peace expedition to the trouble spots of Taranaki, Waikato and Hawke's Bay. The letter (in Māori with English translation provided) was sent to Major Wahawaha Ropata. Ropata (of Ngāti Porou descent) was one of the leading Kūpapa, a Māori who was loyal to the British Monarchy and fought alongside the British in the New Zealand Wars. The letter from Tikawenga was forwarded to Donald McLean, Agent for the General Government - Hawke's Bay, who coordinated civil and military action in the area during the New Zealand Wars. The accompanying letter (shown here, www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/28366235471/in/dateposted/) by Ropata rejected the offer from Tikawenga and stated that Ngāti Porou would not agree to this evil talk.
