Title
Letter from Julius Kauffman to S. S. Prentiss
Description
This letter to Dr. Spencer S. Prentiss of the National Defense Research Committee describes the results of the clinical trial of the Pauling Oxygen Meter by the United States Army. The Army decided not to standardize the meter for use based on its accuracy (no better than other instruments in use at the time) and fragility. Developed from a Linus Pauling design during WWII, the technology behind Beckman Instruments’ oxygen analyzers ended up doing such diverse jobs as monitoring astronauts’ respiration, maintaining packaged food safety, and preventing blindness in newborn babies.
