Summary

[edit]
Description

New Zealand’s first public railway using a steam locomotive ran 7 kilometres from Christchurch to Ferrymead and was built by the Canterbury Provincial Government. Work to construct a rail tunnel through the Port Hills to the port of Lyttelton had already begun and eventually made the Ferrymead line redundant.

The railway and electric telegraph would eventually contribute to the decline of the provincial system but in 1863 the ‘tyranny of distance’ was still very much in effect as far as communications with the outside world were concerned.

The document shown is the first page of a letter of 26 February 1864 from the province’s agent in London, acknowledging receipt of a dispatch from Christchurch dated 14 December 1863 containing a memorandum and sketch of the opening of the railway. The agent promises to forward both to the Illustrated London News and send to Canterbury a copy of the resulting article. His letter was received by the Provincial Secretary on 24 April. The article appeared in a March edition of the paper and would not have been seen by anyone in Canterbury until several months later, that is, some six months after the events described took place.

The London agent’s letter (as well as all the other surviving correspondence of the Canterbury Provincial Government) can be viewed in our Christchurch reading room. CAAR 19936 CP54 ICPS1322/1864 archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=22196382
