Description
English: "...getting into them. Some of them came out in shorter time than it took to get into them.

I understand that we are to go to Governor's Island to-day to take on powder. This morning's Herald says that we leave to-day. It also announces the election of Seymour. This is too bad. Well I suppose you would like to know something about the "Vanderbilt." I was down looking at her engines yesterday. She 4 boilers with 8 furnaces to each. Her engine is 2500 horse power. She has 2 cylinders about 8 ft in diameter and about 10 or 11 ft stroke. She consumes on an average 60 tons of coal a day and has been known to consume 100 tons. She averages 20 knots and can make 24 m hour. She mounts 12-9in. and 2-100 prs rifled Pivot Guns. The 100 lb shot are conical about 6in in diameter and 20 or 22in long. We have on..."
