English: "...for the colonel. Tell John I am much obliged to him for his kind offer to make me a couple of them boxes for I have had two given me by McFadden but somebody stole one of them. They are for keeping white lead in for whitening. The belts you have to wear on guard and drill you must keep them as white as snow and your brasses shine like gold. So no more at present. My love to all the family.
