Ship Island Miss March 21 '62

Brother John I received your kind letter on the 6th inst and was glad to hear you were all well as I am at present. We expect to have a sickly summer along the line. It has been a curious winter to me having seen no ice or snow. We have been on the blockade at Grant's Pass and Passagoola a very healthy place to be stationed in the summer time but a very precarious place if the rebels wanted to come out and attack us. They have a battery at Grant's Pass. We have kept a strict blockade because of Mobile Bay being full of schooners. We can see their whole fleet of Rams & Gun Boats. They have 7 Steamers 1 Ram & 15 schooners laying under the guns of the battery. We have picked up about 50 deserters. 3 came down from Mobile who a fellow for 200 dollars Con. Scripts but we kept him a.."
