English: "U.S. Gunboat Clifton
New Orleans La May 1st 1862 Dear Mother with pleasure I write these few lines to let you know I am well hoping these few lines may find you and all the family all well since I last wrote. We have had one of the greatest battles on record with less loss of life. We have made a clear sweep up to New Orleans carrying by storm Fort Jackson Fort St. Philip mounting 240 guns several masked batteries mounting 6 & 12 guns each also sinking and setting fire to 11 gunboats & the battering ram Manassas. We commenced the bombardment on Good Friday and kept it up for 7 days & six nights loosing but 3 men killed & 15 wounded up to the last day of the bombardment..."
