Summary

[edit]
Description
English: "...doubtful whether she go directly to the straits. After arriving at Portsmouth they had to march 5 miles through the mud up to knees (as they said) to the Barracks. They say that the Barracks there are not near as pleasant as ours.

The other day I went aboard the prize steamer "Memphis." She is a beautiful little craft every about being built in a most substantial manner. There are 3 engines on her one for her wheel one for hauling in anchor cable and the third for hoisting sails. I also see the Iron Prize Steamer [illegible] and the English Prize "Circassion." They are at work now refitting her for a transport. I guess Johnnie Bull would not be very well pleased to see her lying as she does in the U.S. Navy Yard the property of the Government. She was captured some time ago off the Bahamas. I hope you will yet get that letter for it was a description of what I saw in the Navy Yard and I do not want to undertake to write it over again. Hoping that this will find you all well. I remain

Your affectionate brother

John"
