Summary
[edit]DescriptionLetitia Rosenberg Home for Women -- Galveston.jpg |
English: In 1896, the Letitia Rosenberg Woman’s Home was formally dedicated. Named in honor of Henry Rosenberg’s first wife, the building served as a residence for elderly women in poor health or in need of financial assistance.
In 1888 a Lady Board of Managers was formed for the purpose of maintaining a residence for the women. Henry Rosenberg saw this effort as filling a pressing need in Galveston, and provided in his will for the construction of a permanent structure. Mr Rosenberg dedicated the home in memory of his first wife Letitia. The building was designed by famed German Architect Alfred Muller. The building operated as a home for women until 1970 Severely damaged in the 1900 Storm and reconstructed. The high-raised, stucco-faced brick building presents a grandly scaled symmetrical elevation—double loggias framed by gabled wings—to Rosenberg Avenue, while opening in an L-plan configuration to the prevailing southeast breeze and views toward the Gulf of Mexico. |
