A LETCHWORTH FACTORY Letchworth is a business as well as a residential town. One object of the promoters is to bring industries fromcrowded towns to a centre where roomy factories can be built and the workers can live under healthy conditionsnear to their work. The works are to a large extent located in a quarter specially suited to them to the north-east of the town, and thus do not, nor ever can, present any objectionable features to the residential area. Thefactories are some of the finest in the country, and among the iirms represented are : Messrs W. H. Smith& Sons Bookbinding Works, the Arden Press, J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd, the Lacre Motor Car Co. Ltd, thePhcenix Motors Ltd, the Heatly-Gresham Engineering Co. Ltd, Hayes Printing Developments Ltd, Ewart& Son Ltd, Woodworkers Ltd, and the Country Gentlemens Association Ltd. 71

There is an excellent supply of water, the charges beingcalculated at 6 to ^\ per cent on the assessment, for domestic supply,and by meter for factories. Gas. The Gas Works is one of the most up-to-date in the country, therate being 3 s. net per i o o o for lighting (including meter and stove hire). RleSiricity. The Electric Power Station has recently been consider-ably enlarged to meet the increasing demand for power and lightingin the centre of the town. Drainage. All the roads in the town are sewered; the sanitary con-ditions are thoroughly satisfactory. Railway Facilities. Letchworth Station is on the G.N.R. 34 milesfrom Kings X. The existing temporary station is about to be replacedby a large permanent station. The train service is good and is beingsteadily improved: London (Kings X) being reached und
