| Description |
Native, warm-season, perennial, erect legume, 60-120 cm tall, with a woody rootstock and few-branched stems. Leaves have 3 leaflets, each linear to ovate, hairless above, hairy below and to 25 mm long. Flowerheads are clusters of 1-7 of pea-like flowers in the leaf axils. Flowers are white with pink to purple and about 6 mm long. Pods are small and circular. Flowering is in summer and autumn. Found in grasslands and woodlands which are lightly grazed or regularly rested. It also occurs in disturbed areas, such as along roadsides. An isolated population of L. juncea in the southern Illawarra area, south of Dapto, is regarded as endangered. Native biodiversity. Cattle prefer new growth, which have softer stems and a lower tannin content. Older plants are unpalatable to stock due to high tannin levels. The leaves have a higher tannin content than the stems; these tannins can reduce the digestibility of crude proteins. It may produce allelopathic compounds that inhibit the growth of other plants. It declines under continuous heavy grazing and is best suited to light grazing or extended rests between grazings. |
