The park was named after Chief Leschi of the Nisqually tribe. It was developed in 1889 by the Lake Washington Cable Railway Company and included many features such as a dance pavilion (constructed in 1902), a zoo, boat rentals and access to the Leschi Ferry which transported passengers across Lake Washington.
