rTerre et la Grande-Terre séparées lune delautre par un bras de mer dune longueur de 6 milles environ etdune largeur variant entre 30 et 100 mètres. La Basse-Terre affecte la forme dune ellipse irrégulière diri-gée du Nord au Sud entre les deux extrémités de la pointe Allègreet de la Pointe-à-Launay. De son origine volcanique, elle garde de nombreux foyers, lesuns éteints ou à peu près, les autres encore en activité, comme laSoufrière. Larête montagneuse qui traverse lîle du Sud au Nordlonge le rivage oriental de la mer dassez près pour ny laisser placequau seul port de la Basse-Terre. La Grande-Terre a la forme dun triangle ; son sol plat et enterrasse ne comporte presque pas de cours deau ; elle renfermeà elle seule les principaux ports de la colonie : la Pointe^à-Pitre:,le Moule, Saint-François, Sainte-Anne et le Port-Louis. La Guadeloupe possède un certain nombre de sources thermaleset minérales ; elle est sujette pendant lhivernage à dassez fortes — 21(J

Son organisation politique, administrative et municipale, est.identique à celle de la Martinique et de la Réunion. Le régime économique est sensiblement le même. Principales importations : Produits alimentaires, matériaux de construction, tissus,houille, riz. Principales exportations : Sucre, mélasse, rhum, tafia, café, cacao, campêche, vanille,ananas.
