Jaime à croire que de tous les Dieux de la Mythologie,ce-ci eft le moins fabuleux. On peut le rencontrer au fein descampagnes , tel quon seft plu à le peindre ici. Ceft lui quia fervi de modèle aux comportions naïves de Théocrite, deVirgile & de GelTner. Ceft lui quéprouve fans le fçavoir liu*nocente villageoife qui neft point encore fortie de fon hameau;Et ceft lui enfin que lAuteur du Devin du village a crayonnéavec tant de vérité & de grâces fur le théâtre de la féerie & duîuxe. (60 Planche XXXIX. Cette belle figure de femme efl: admirablement bien drappée.Son vêtement eft violet changeant; & fon manteau de delTus,blanc ;une coëffe lui cache fa chevelure. De la main gauche , elleporte un tyrfe entrelacé de bandelettes. Elle tient de la maindroite un petit vafe à deux anfes régulières. Cefl peut-être une Bacchante ; les Bacchantes nétoient pastoujours furieufes, échevelées, & le fein découvert. Elles ferecueilloient & prenoient un air grave & décent, quand il falloitfaire un facrifice. Cette figure paroît appartenir aux initiations des myftères deBacchus. Planche XL. Ce Vieillard chauve & barbu , couronné de pampres, vêtude blanc jufquà la ceinture , debout, & appuyant fon brasgauche élevé fur un tyrfe, ou long bâton orné de feuilles parle bout & entrelacé dun ferpent , eft vraifemblement unSilène : il en a tous les attributs. Le ferpent fait allufion aux myftérieufes Orgies de Bacchus,oîi il jouoit un rôl
