Tout cela étoit perfonmfié, divinifé. Le génie poétique desAnciens donnoit de la vie à tout. Tous les corps à leurs yeuxprenoient un ame ; & ils revêtiffoient dun corps toutes leursidées abftraites : enforte quon pouvoit appeller leur mytholo-gie : la Philofophie en images. Elle eftcouchée fur le dos dun monftre, de couleur deau de mer &tacheté, efpèce de Tygre marin ou de Panthère, en action delécher ce qui tombe dans le plat : fruit du caprice & de lima-.gination de lhabile Artifte. Les Anciens croyoient que les femmes qui perdoient la viedans la mer, étoient métamorphofées en Néréides. Sur quelques Monumens, on voit des Néréides, moitiéfemmes, moitié poifTons. En Phénicie on adoroit une Nym-phe qui avoit cette forme. Peut-être neft-ce quun Hiérogly-phe de la Métempficofe, ou paflage de lame humaine dans lecorpis de quelquanimal ou de quelque plante.
