Dans le Laonnois et le Soisonnais, on appelle "creutes" ou "boves" les multiples cavités creusées depuis des siècles dans les épaisses couches de calcaire des collines de ces territoires. Ces carrières exploitées pour la construction de maisons et d'édifices publics ou culturels ont servis parfois dès le Moyen-âge et souvent jusqu'au début du XXème siècle. Durant la Première Guerre mondiale, les creutes peuvent servir d'abris ou de cantonnement aux combattants. Tout un aménagement intérieur y fut implanté par les différentes armées : dortoirs, postes de commandement, infirmeries, chapelles, etc. et parfois des installations électriques et téléphoniques. Combattants français, allemands, britanniques et américains y laissèrent graffiti, sculptures et bas-reliefs. Les creutes ne sont généralement pas accessibles au public. Seuls l'Espace muséographique de la Caverne du Dragon aménagé dans une creute et la Carrière de Rouge-Maison peuvent être visités. source : www.chemindesdames.fr |
