Description

This village and castle is in the Alpilles mountains in Provence in the South of France. It sits on a spectacular outcrop, high above the valley below.

There are traces of people having lived here for about 8000 years, probably because it is in a good defensive position. Today many visitors come to see the pretty village and scenic location. I first visited it in 1979 and always wanted to come back. I found it to be just as I remembered it.

The village has been a location in several films, including The End of the Day (1938); Testament of Orpheus (1959); Dead Tired (1994); Ronin (1998); the Amazing Race (2001 & 2017) and Days of Glory 2006

For those interested in Geology the name Bauxite (Aluminium ore) is named after here when it was first discovered locally in 1821.
