Description

Merahi metua no Tehamana / Les Aïeux de Tehamana (Tehamana Has Many Parents or The Ancestors of Tehamana), Oeuvre de Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) février-mars 1893 Huile sur toile de jute

Il s'agit du portrait de Tehamana, la jeune compagne de l'artiste à Tahiti lors de son premier séjour. Elle porte une robe à rayures donnée par les missionnaires européens. On est loin du paradis primitif et sauvage que Gauguin croyait trouver à Tahiti, en y arrivant. Cette colonie française encadrée par l'administration était occidentalisée de force. Derrière le personnage féminin, l'artiste a représenté la déesse Hina qui dans la mythologie polynésienne est le mère de tous, Ta'aroa étant le père.
