Description
English: Seto - Canvas Painting

Support - Canvas Medium - Tempera Period - 19th century Dimension - 359 x 181 cm

Canvas Painting that had been pasted on the partition wall of the Prayer Hall of the Lepcha Bong Gumpa was removed mechanically from the wall after the earthquake that struck in 2011 damaged the walls severely. The painting was removed in 6 different long panels. The painting depicts Guru Rimpoche and deity Chenreji on right and left sides respectively. Deity Chenreji, known as Shaanti Dev is the symbolism of peace which is spread in the Universe and is a Universal Dharma protector, while Guru Rimpoche is known as Krodh Dev and is known to be the protector of the Universal life. This painting is known as 'Seto', meaning 100 qualities. Vajryana Buddhism, which is practised in this monastery, believes in 108 qualities. Deity Chenreji has 42 qualities and Guru Rimpoche has 58 qualities which sums up to the 100 qualities, and 8 qualities are additional in Vajrayana Buddhism. Since the painting depicts idols, whose qualities sums up to 100, this painting is called Seto.

The central portion of the painting depicts the founder of Dharma, known as founder of Duppa Kayu whose name is Guru Chaya Lama. Below Guru Chaya Lama is Guru Hishye Rabge who established the Lepcha Bong Gumpa Monastery. Guru Rimpoche is depicted along with two disciples on both right and left sides known as Mendarava and Hishye Chogel.

The painting had been severely damaged in the disaster of 2011, and the removal and the poor storage conditions afterwards also led to the increase in deterioration. INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) took up the conservation an restoration project of Lepcha Bong Gumpa which also included the conservation of 'Seto' painting. The process included cleaning, consolidation of flaking paint layer, joining of panel, patch mending and reintegration. The condition of the painting was finally stabilized.
