Description
Deutsch: „Sehr wahrscheinlich, daß zu dem Brande von Magdeburg, der dann erfolgte, von dem militärischen Befehlshaber, einem Deutschen in schwedischem Dienst <Dietrich von Falkenberg>, und selbst von den entschiedenen Mitgliedern des Rathes eine eventuelle Veranstaltung im voraus getroffen war. Es wäre ein früheres Moskau gewesen <Brand von Moskau (1812)>. Die Flamme bezeichnete den Punkt, bis zu welchem die nationale Verzweiflung getrieben war. Die wilde Wuth einer ungebändigten Soldateska verwandelte die blühende Stadt vollends in einen Schutthaufen. Nur die geistlichen Gebäude wurden gerettet, und der katholische Gottesdienst im Dom erneuert.“
