Description

Canting heraldic badge of Leo Galeatus (Latin) Leone Galeato (Italian) ("helmed lion"). Badge of w:Galeazzo II Visconti (c.1320-1378). leone galeato con secchi. First adopted by Galeazzo II Visconti (1354), who had to spend about a decade in exile in Savoy. As seen on coins. It may be interpreted as: 'Fury will be repressed by reason as long as fate demands'. The motto was often placed in a foreign language to make it seem even more puzzling. A ragged staff with two buckets were added later to this impresa. Galeazzo Maria Sforza simply took over the 'impresa' of a predecessor of the same name. (Source: www.coingallery.de [1]). A lion sejant wearing a closed helm garnished or with crest and mantling atop barry sable and azure, with ostrich feather atop, seated in flames, holding a ragged staff from the top of which hang two buckets on a string. Motto inscribed on lion's crest: Hic Hof. Illuminated page by Cristoforo de Predis from the New Testament Codex, varia 124, Italy 1475 (Biblioteca Reale, Torino) ). Inscribed: "G(ALEAZ)Z(O) MA(RIA) DUX M(EDIO)L(AN)I QUINTUS" ("Galeazzo Maria, 5th Duke of Milan"). w:Galeazzo Maria Sforza (1444-1476), 5th Duke of Milan from 1466 until 1476.

Emblema tipico è l’impresa “del leone galeato”, nato con Galeazzo II Visconti (1310- 1378), ripreso dai successori sforzeschi, tra cui Galeazzo Maria Sforza (1444-1476) che lo predilesse, anche per l’assonanza che ne richiamava il nome (CAMBIN, Le rotelle, alla voce “leone galeato”: p. 441, f. 236, 237 e 255) ([2])

Imprese: Tizzoni ardenti con funi e secchi. Motto: “Humentia siccis” Leone galeato con tizzoni e secchi. Motto: “Ich hof”.
“Ich hof”…. “Perch’io no spero di tornar giammai…” avrebbe potuto tradurre un altro esule famoso, Guido Cavalcanti, per questo figlio di Stefano Visconti e Valentina Doria. Dieci anni di esilio trascorsi in terra straniera non lasciavano molte speranze di tornare, c’era di che ringraziare lo zio Luchino. Ma la triste esperienza fu davvero una grande scuola di vita per il giovane Galeazzo. Vinto in duello il Conestabile di Borbone – stando a quanto dice il codice Cremosano [1] – s’impossessò della sua impresa composta da tizzoni ardenti con funi e secchi e la trasferì tra le zampe di un leone accosciato e “galeato”. Gàlea in latino significa elmo, “galeatus” è colui che porta l’elmo: sotto le sembianza di questo superbo animale si cela quindi Galeazzo che, umiliato dal dover far dipendere il proprio destino dall’altrui voglia, ha imparato a controllare l’ardore del proprio temperamento con la freddezza della ragione (l’acqua contenuta nei secchi). In una parola, ha imparato la temperanza, dote fondamentale per un politico.... Tizzoni ardenti con funi e secchi. Impresa conquistata in occasione del duello con il Connestabile di Borbone e in seguito trasferita tra le zampe del Leone galeato
