Miss Longfellow,
Dear Friend
It is with great pleasure that I write to thank you for the nice Christmas present which you sent me. It was a very pleasant surprise when Miss Sherman gave it to me.
I can not tell how grateful I am to you for your kindness in thinking of me, but I hope to prove to you my appreciation by making the most of my opportunities here, [p. 2] and by doing valuable work when I shall have gone from here. And I do hope that you may never have to regret the kind interest you have taken in me.
